Agusan Norte farmers find fortune in cassava crops

BUTUAN CITY – Agusan Norte upland farmers have found fortune in cassava production.

, p in Las Nieves, Agusan del Norte are now starting to reap the fruits of their labor in venturing into another agricultural endeavor to earn additional income.

Convinced that monocropping is not enough to sustain them, farmers in Las Nieves town here have found that the farming venture they started last January could help them survive the Covid-19 pandemic’s devastation.

Barangay Lingayao farmer Roberto Calapre said he is now convinced cassava farming will ensure their survival from the pandemic. He heads the Lingayao Kahayagan Cassava Farmers Association (LKCFA) with some 48 members,

LKCFA has partnered with the Las Nievas municipal government and the Department of Agriculture in Caraga Region (DA-13) in cassava production under the Las Nievas Cassava Cluster Development Plan for 2020-2025, using a 30-hectare farmland in Lingayao.

The DA-13 office provided tractors, two units of cassava chippers and the same number of cassava granulators to the project, the harvesting of which started last week of November.

Calapre said the machineries provided them by DA-13 helped them significantly in carrying out the project and they delivered four tons of cassava granules to their buyer in Esperanza, Agusan del Sur recently.

Aside from cassava chippers and granulators, Calapre said DA-13 also provided them a digger, vacuum pack sealer, corn sheller and corn planter. He added they will deliver more cassava granules to their partner-buyer in Agusan del Sur in the weeks to come.

Las Nievas Municipal Agriculturist Leonito C. Pasquito said thay have linkd the LKCFA with another farmers group in Esperanza which has an existing contract to sell cassava granules to big companies.

“The market is not a problem for processed cassava. The group of Mr. Calapre has an assured market and they had already made their initial delivery at P11 per kilo,” he said, adding that their office will encourage more corn farmers in the town to venture into cassava farming and production because of its profitability.
