MANILA – Bagong Henerasyon party-list Rep. Bernadette Herrera said the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) should shoulder the costs for the Covid-19) tests of micro, small, and medium enterprises workers.
Herrera the Department of Health should issue guidance for MSMEs on where they can have their employees undergo free reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) testing the costs of which PhilHealth should shoulder.
“MSMEs cannot afford to shoulder the cost of Covid-19 testing because they simply have no funds. PhilHealth must learn lessons from the congressional hearings. We do not want any corruption allegation in the implementation of this,” the party-list lady lawmaker said, stressing that “PhilHealth must be part of the solution to slow the spread of the virus.”
She also proposed that for consumer protection, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the DOH should strictly regulate the prices of Covid-19 tests and traditional medicines in the market.
Herrera lamented that PCR test kits now cost P7,000 to P10,000 each which are decidedly expensive even as they slow in producing results,
She likewise suggested that DOH and the Food and Drug Administration should review all the Covid-19 tests they have approved, since data show they are ineffective.
